Law enforcement officials on Monday requested information from the public about a shootout in Sonora on Saturday that left one person dead and two injured. Tuolumne County Sheriff’s Sgt. Scott Johnson said the office has requested any witnesses, particularly those with audio or video recordings of the incident, contact the office at 694-2900.

Ski resorts ready for season

Bear Valley Mountain Resort has been in snowmaking mode and plans to have ski lifts running Saturday. The resort, off upper Highway 4 just east of Calaveras County, has been snowmaking since Thursday in anticipation of the 2014-15 ski season.

Last week’s rains gave the Mother Lode a good soaking, but the series of storms were a drop in the bucket relative to what’s needed to get California out of the current drought. Earlier this month, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s National Climatic Data Center released a report stating the past 36 months, November 2011 to October 2014, comprise the driest and warmest 36-month period on record.

Holiday parades set

The cities of Sonora and Angels Camp will follow Thursday’s Thanksgiving holiday with evening Christmas parades. Sonora will host its 31st annual Historic Downtown Sonora Christmas Parade starting at 5:30 p.m. Friday. A variety of floats, musicians and animals will proceed down Washington Street, starting from the Red Church and spanning south to Restano Way.

TUD plans pipeline flushing

Tuolumne Utilities District facilities staff plan to flush the district’s sanitary sewer collection pipeline beneath Lyons Street in Sonora between 7 a.m. and noon Wednesday. Motorists in the area can expect intermittent traffic delays on Lyons Street between Hope Lane and Greenley Road. Sanitary sewer flushing is a common maintenance activity used to improve pipe flow, in this case to prepare for anticipated heavy use over the Thanksgiving holiday, according to a district announcement.

Community Thanksgiving meals planned in Mother Lode

Several community Thanksgiving dinners are planned this week throughout the Mother Lode. They include:• Christian Heights Church and the Heart Rock Cafe will host the annual Thanksgiving With Friends, a free community dinner, at 5:30 p.m. today at the Heart Rock Cafe, 1 S. Washington St., Sonora. Christian Heights Church has sponsored the meal for the public since 2000. • Mother Lode Christian School in Tuolumne and Chapel in the Pines Church in Twain Harte will host a free Community Thanksgiving Dinner from noon to 6 p.m. today at the Tuolumne Veterans Memorial Hall in Tuolumne. Man found dead near train tracks

A man was found dead Monday next to railroad tracks on Tuolumne Road below The Junction shopping center in East Sonora, according to the Tuolumne County Sheriff’s Office. Personnel from the Sheriff’s Office and California Highway Patrol had part of the road blocked and a crime scene taped off for several hours as they investigated the death.

Date set in Fowler murder trial

A date has finally been set for the trial of a 14-year-old boy accused of killing his younger sister in Valley Springs in spring 2013. The boy is charged with second degree murder for allegedly stabbing his 8-year-old sister, Leila Fowler, to death when he was 12 in April 2013 at the family’s Rippon Road home.

Area school administrators’ pay keeps growing

Pay for Tuolumne County’s top-level school administration grew by more than $80,000 this year to just under $1.3 million, nearly double Calaveras County. Tuolumne County paid its superintendents $1,273,602 this year, while Calaveras County paid $669,655, an increase of only $2,000 from last year. Adding benefits, those numbers climb at least an additional $100,000 in Tuolumne County and $60,000 in Calaveras County.
