Sonora High math teacher and former softball coach Karen Sells will take over as the Wildcats athletic director in June when Rick Francis, longtime caretaker of the position, retires. Sells was chosen by the Sonora High Board of Trustees in closed session at Tuesday’s meeting. “I’m extremely excited,” Sells said. “It will be a different challenge from teaching. I love to teach, but athletics have always been where my heart is. And it’s the best of both worlds, I will still get to teach part time.”

A low-water boat-launch ramp has reopened at Moccasin Point Recreation Area on Don Pedro Reservoir, the Don Pedro Recreation Agency announced Monday. Sufficient water levels have allowed the agency to reopen the alternative boat launch at the site, according to the agency’s news release. The ramp is usable for launching shallow draft boats, but the ramp’s grade is too shallow for launching deep-hulled boats. Low water levels over the summer caused by the three-year drought led to the closure of the ramps at Moccasin Point in July. The alternative ramp can be accessed by taking the road to the left of the regular boat-launch ramp at Moccasin Point Recreation Area. A boat-launch ramp at Fleming Meadows Recreation Area has remained open throughout the drought for all types of boat launching, the agency said.
