Victor Lee ‘Vic’ Haskin April 19, 1918 — Sept. 2, 2012 Sonora resident Victor Lee “Vic” Haskin died Sept. 2 at Avalon Care Center of Sonora. He was 94. Mr. Haskin was born in Lone Pine, Neb. He served in the U.S. Air Force in Europe during World War II. Mr. Haskin worked as a maintenance supervisor for more than 35 years. He retired to Sonora and built a home more than 30 years ago. He served was a member of the Aromas Baptist Church and was a lay pastor at Sierra Bible Church. He and his wife spent several years in the Missionary Assistance Corps, serving in India and Honduras. He enjoyed outdoor sports. Mr. Haskin was preceded in death by three siblings. He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Wilma Haskin, of Sonora; his children, Lee Haskin, of Watsonville, and Frances Haskin Hermanson, of Phoenix; his siblings, Neil Haskin, of San Luis Obispo, and Jean Kalar, of Grass Valley; his grandchildren, Andrew Mills, of Daly City, Carolyn Mills-Schwartz, of El Mirage, Ariz., Jennifer Dittbrender, of Eagle River, Ala., and Sarah Burkett, of Folsom; and eight great-grandchildren. A memorial service was scheduled for 1:30 p.m. today at Sierra Bible Church, 15171 Tuolumne Road, Sonora. Terzich and Wilson Funeral Home is handling arrangements. Frank Ferreira Machado Sr. Oct. 18, 1967 — Sept. 2, 2012 Sonora resident Frank Ferreira Machado Sr. died Sept. 2 at his home. He was 44. Mr. Machado was born in Stockton to Joe Machado Sr. and Norma L. Machado. He moved to Sonora 15 years ago to be closer to family. He served in the U.S. Army from 1987 to 1989. He worked as a plumber for more than 15 years. In addition to raising his son, Franky Machado Jr., he also helped raise Kayla and Robert Parr and Kevin Sullivan, the children of his fiancee, Jeanee Sullivan. Mr. Machado was preceded in death by his father, Joe Machado Sr., in 2010. He is survived by his mother, Norma L. Machado, of Sonora, his fiancee, Jeanee Sullivan, of Sonora; and his son, Franky Machado Jr., of Sonora; and his siblings, Joe Machado Jr., of Artois, Dan Machado, of Soulsbyville, John Machado, of Sonora, Julie Sweatt, of Tuolumne, and Joyce Hellenbrand, of Canyon Country. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 19481 Hillside Drive, East Sonora. Stanley ‘Stan’ Olsen July 26, 1929 - Sept. 10, 2012 Sonora resident Stanley “Stan” Olsen died Monday at his home. He was 83. Mr. Olsen was born in Hibbing, Minn. He lived in Sonora for the past 34 years. He served as fighter pilot in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War. He later worked for United Airlines for 34 years as a pilot. Mr. Olsen flew the Pacific as Captain and was based in New York and San Francisco. He enjoyed music and was member of band during his youth. He also enjoyed the outdoors and fly-fishing in Alaska and California. He raised Labrador retrievers and setters. Mr. Olsen is survived by his wife of 58 years, Doris Olsen, of Sonora; his children and their spouses, Gary and Susan Olsen, of Reno, Nev., Karen Olsen, of Taos, N.M., and Roger and Kathleen Olsen, of Sonora; his grandchildren, Christopher Olsen, Erin Olsen, Egan Elston, Zoe Elston, and Johnathan and Candace Olsen; and one great-granddaughter. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Tuolumne County Humane Society, P.O. Box 830, Jamestown, CA 95327. A celebration of life will be held at 5 p.m. Saturday in the garden at the Olsen residence. Terzich and Wilson Funeral Home is handling arrangements. Local events mark 9/11

It’s been 11 years since the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks. And while there won’t be the same number of large local ceremonies or remembrances as last year’s 10th anniversary, some Mother Lode organizations are still holding memorials to remember the fateful day. “We should remember this day, and honor this day always,” said Faye McBride, who is part of the Ladies Auxiliary of the Thom Jenkins VFW Post. “I think it would be no different than if we were doing something for Veterans Day.”

Commission says chickens OK in city

A proposed ordinance allowing Sonora residents to raise livestock on their property cleared a hurdle Monday night when it was approved by the Sonora Planning Commission, after nearly a year of debate. Commissioners unanimously voted to recommend the Sonora City Council amend the city’s General Plan 2020 and adopt the ordinance that would allow keeping a limited number and certain types of backyard farm animals within city limits depending on parcel size.

Education board votes on Prop 30, 38 endorsements

The future of public education funding, and the content students will learn, were the topics of discussion at a Tuolumne County Board of Education meeting Monday. The board heard an update from county Deputy Superintendent of Schools Margie Bulkin on major changes to teaching standards coming next year. Later, with some reluctance, the board passed a resolution in support of two proposed state tax increases to help fund education.

Man arrested in candy store heist

An employee at an East Sonora candy shop was robbed at knifepoint Saturday by a Sonora man who worked in the same shopping center, according to the Tuolumne County Sheriff’s Office. In the third armed robbery in two months, authorities say a man entered the Columbia Candy Kitchen in The Junction shopping center brandishing a knife and demanding cash.

Summerville High School: Budget report on Wednesday docket

The Summerville Union High School District Board of Education will hear a budget report and a variety of other updates at its regular board meeting Wednesday. The budget report to be presented by Summerville Chief Business Official Tonya Midget will reflect the “closing of the books” for the 2011-12 school year, staff said. Also at the meeting, a presentation will be given on visual and performing arts at the district.

Duck races draw crowd

Proceeds from the event benefit Kids Reach at Twain Harte Elementary School, which helps pay for instructional trips and teaching materials. After a good effort in losing a three-set match against non-conference opponent Denair, 20-25, 19-25, and 20-25, the Timberwolves (3-0, 4-3) bounced back with a three-set victory over Delta Charter in a Mountain Valley League conference match, 25-13, 25-15, and 25-11 on Thursday. Tioga was led by the serving of sophomore Krysti Mitchell with five aces and 12 service points. Samantha Hindle contributed six kills and Brianna Deckard added five kills. Brianna Deckard and Melinda Pollock also added three aces each. “We played well against Denair and were in every game until we had a stretch of four-to-six straight points when we couldn’t get a side out,” said Tioga head coach Tim Donovan. “The Delta team is really inexperienced and struggles to score on their own.”

Bantam Bears fall to Argonaut 19-6

The Summerville Bears bantam football team gave host Argonaut a tough battle on Saturday. Argonaut prevailed 19-6. For Summerville, Jaden Brocchini made numerous tough takedowns on defense. On offense, Brocchini thrilled the visiting side with an electrifying 60-yard second half TD run.

7th-grade runner takes 2nd in Sparks

Tori French, a 7th-grader at Soulsbyville Elementary, finished third overall, and second for the Buffalo Babes 8th-grade-and-under team, in the Natures Bakery Twilight Classic at Shadow Mountain Park in Sparks, NV., on Saturday. Her time was 13:08 which is a 7:04 per-mile pace for 3,000m.

District engineer Glen Nunnelley, at Tuesday’s board meeting, outlined the status of water levels, particularly at Pinecrest Lake and Lyons Reservoir.

A new sexual-abuse lawsuit against a former Catholic priest who ministered in both Tuolumne and Calaveras counties was filed Tuesday in San Joaquin County Superior Court. The lawsuit alleges Michael Kelly sexually abused a 12-year-old altar boy while head priest at St. Andrew’s Parish in San Andreas from 2000 to 2002.

Firefighters last night contained a Mountain Ranch fire that burned 23 acres. The Michel Fire, centered on the 5000 block of Michel Road, was declared 100 percent contained about 6 p.m., according Cal Fire communications operator Ed Allendorf. One fire engine will be assigned to patrol the area today, he said.

County budget looks better

It appears the final budget for Calaveras County that will take the local government up through June 2013 will be somewhat more robust than was expected, allowing for the potential increase of staffing in some depleted departments. The budget is $136.8 million across all funds, an increase of $12 million compared to the preliminary budget adopted in late June.

Supervisors give thumbs up to county noise regs

The Calaveras County Board of Supervisors on Tuesday voted 5-0 to adopt a countywide noise ordinance that will become effective Oct. 25. Late-night music that irked neighbors of large festivals at Lake Tulloch Resort and on private land near Sheep Ranch in recent years brought on a renewed effort to establish a formal regulation.
