Tuolumne and Calaveras county students continued making gains on standardized test scores last spring, but a new test format will challenge both students and teachers in years to come. Released Friday, the 2012 results of the Standardized Testing and Reporting (STAR) assessments show that a greater percentage of Mother Lode students reached the “proficient” level or better in core subjects than in 2011.

His home base is Los Angeles, but Gold is the godson and frequent visitor of Twain Harte residents Judy and Roger Haughton. CDC: 10K possibly exposed to virus

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta issued a warning to healthcare providers Friday stating as many as 10,000 recent visitors to Yosemite National Park were potentially exposed to a rare, rodent-borne disease that has already killed two people. Between June 10 and Aug. 24, an estimated 10,000 people stayed in the “signature tent cabins” in Yosemite Valley’s popular Curry Village lodging area, which has been at the center of a recent outbreak of hantavirus pulmonary syndrome, according to the advisory sent out through the CDC’s Health Alert Network.

Air quality in Tuolumne and Calaveras counties has improved to meet federal standards, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency announced Friday. The counties are among nine areas in California to meet the 1997 national health-based air quality standard for smog, also known as ground-level ozone, within their regulatory deadlines.

The Sonora Wildcats earned a 14th-place finish at the High Sierra Volleyball Invitational in Reno. The two-day tournament was comprised of 36 teams from Nevada and California. On Friday, the Cats opened with a 2-1 (24-26, 25-14, 15-13) win over Douglas High of Minden, Nev. The Cats scored the final seven points of Game 3.

Behind a century-old barn in San Andreas, visitors gathered over the past two years to listen to the clanking of metal, smell the burning of coals and admire an artform that has become a rarity. Certified blacksmith Eden Sanders, 66, volunteered at the Red Barn Museum, where she performed demonstrations, taught classes and created artifacts to auction off at fundraisers.

The Tuolumne Utilities District announced Tuesday that it is dropping a countywide water conservation mandate implemented last month. The measure was part of a state requirement imposed after TUD officials asked the State Water Resources Control Board to allow the district to draw an additional two feet from the water level at Pinecrest Lake in eastern Tuolumne County.

Sonora police are asking for the public’s help to identify the suspect in a Tuesday morning armed robbery at Walmart. A surveillance image taken by Walmart security cameras was released Tuesday afternoon showing a man wearing sunglasses, a fake beard and wig who appears to be standing behind an employee.

Quarry deal ends lawsuit

The lengthy legal battle over the a west-county quarry is over, and at least one member of the Tuolumne County Board of Supervisors is not happy about the agreement. Supervisor Randy Hanvelt made some impassioned comments Tuesday about a settlement agreement between the county, city of Riverbank, Cooperstown Quarry owners, the Central Sierra Environmental Resource Center and Friends of the Mother Lode, publicly calling the latter groups’ legal opposition to the Cooperstown Quarry “un-American” and “extortion.”

Board of Supervisors OKs county 2012-13 budget

The Tuolumne County Board of Supervisors approved a final budget on Tuesday, though the supervisors still have a handful of budget-related decisions to make in the coming weeks. With Supervisors Evan Royce and John Gray absent, the board voted 3-0 to approve the final county budget. The $135 million spending plan is different than the initial budget proposed in June by County Administrator Craig Pedro and includes about 9.5 county positions that faced elimination and layoffs in the original proposed budget.

One dies, others hurt in weekend accidents

One person was killed and five others were seriously injured in car crashes across the Mother Lode since Friday. Cindy Conrad, 53, of Soulsbyville, died from injuries she suffered in a Friday afternoon solo car accident at Highway 108 and Soulsbyville Road, the California Highway Patrol said.

Angels Camp plans 100th celebratoin

Angels Camp is preparing for a street fair for the ages Sept. 28 and 29 to conclude a year-long celebration of the centennial anniversary of the city’s incorporation. “The street fair may well be the largest event held on Main Street since the frog jumps were held there in the 1920s and ’30s,” said event promoter Jay Shotwell.
